Miami Dolphins Looking At Alex Smith
The San Francisco 49ers could face a quarterback problem. QB Alex Smith is reportedly in contract talks with the Miami Dolphins. Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports. The two sides are in talks. These discussions could land Smith in Miami next season. Klis reports that the deal is worth around $8 million per season. This is the same amount that the 49ers reportedly offered Smith before the start of free agency.
Miami had been one of the teams interested in landing Manning. Nevertheless, the veteran signal caller informed the Dolphins last week. He was not interested in joining the Dolphins. Miami also started the weekend with an interview with free agent QB Matt Flynn. Unfortunately, Flynn signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. The Miami Dolphins were running out of options at quarterback if they were serious about replacing Matt Moore under center.
This move has potential repercussions for the Niners as well. If they do miss out on Peyton Manning, their options could be seriously limited. There is a chance that the Niners could be forced to start second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernik. If Manning lands with the Denver Broncos, Tim Tebow might become available. Still, it is unknown whether head coach Jim Harbaugh would be interested in acquiring the southpaw. If Manning lands in Tennessee, veteran Matt Hasselbeck will be available and would be a good fit for the Niners.
But, it is possible that Alex Smith might still be available. After all, we are discussing a signing in Miami. Until Smith’s signature is on the dotted line, all bets are off. Smith’s sudden plunge into the free agency market over the weekend raises concerns. Reports of him wanting to change his agent also suggest tension. This indicates that the Niners’ flirtation with Manning has done irreparable harm to their relationship.
